Excursions & Outdoor Activities

The location of our Hotel is exceptional; it lies in the heart of a historically most interesting area. It is not far from beautiful beaches and the historic and active town of Rethymno (http://www.city-tour.gr/) is only 18 km away. The Northern and Southern coasts of Crete offer some of the best beaches in Europe. What is more, Rethymnon is located fairly centrally on the island of Crete which offers a wide array of activities of natural, historical, cultural or pure entertainment interest. Therefore there is plenty to do and see within easy reach.

If you are interested in archaeology, you can visit the three ancient towns in the area of Eleftherna which is of world interest for its Homeric burial sites which reveal the burying rituals of the times, Melidoni for its prehistoric cave or Armeni for its late-Minoan cemetery. The village of Axos was one of the most important cities in the Minoan and Geometrical period as well as in Roman times. In Asteri there is an ancient oil press worth visiting. Both the monasteries of Arkadi and Preveli, which are the most visited sites after Knossos, are a must. Built in 1587, Arkadi Monastery played an important role in the cultural life and history of the island as well as in its rebellion against the Ottaman occupation. It is a protected monument and one of Europe’s Monuments to Freedom.

Both Knossos and Phaestos may be part of an itinerary for a long day away. Early Christian churches are everywhere in the area to be visited and admired. The natural beauty of the area is an asset for those who love outdoor activities. You can walk to Arkadi Monastery from the hotel or follow the gorge which leads you through the magnificent wild landscape to the architecturally interesting village of Pikri. Alternatively, we are able to organise other trekking routes for you around the countryside which is abundant with wild herbs and flowers. The mountain villages of Mount  Ida and Lefka Ori provide unforgettable experiences.

For those interested in crafts, the village of Margarites, has produced the famous gigantic clay storage vessels (pitharia) since antiquity.  Marvel at the fantastic techniques and craft products as you roam in an out of the many workshops, or savour a Greek coffee in one of the “kafenia” as you enjoy the panoramic view.

Needless to say, one can enjoy the beaches around Rethymnon, take a stroll through the old town, taste the local cuisine in one of its numerous eating places, experience its nightlife or even drive further down to Chania and the surrounding area.

Yet, that is not all. We are happy to help tailor your outings to your specific needs with guided excursions, walking tours, car rental possibilities or guided taxi tours. For more details please do not hesitate to contact us.
